Architects, beyond their corporate identity as a community, should take charge of social norms in the local area, national and international. We are witnessing the devastation caused by the wars of recent years, due to the political and social problems and insecurity in the middle east. This project tried to re-define the present state to design Karm al Jabal district center, one of the most damaged districts of Aleppo, Syria. It should be noted that the ancient city of Aleppo is one of the UNESCO world heritage.

The design takes critical regionalism as its approach. Therefore, through the design process, the social, economic and cultural conditions, precisely the status of Aleppo architecture, had been analyzed. Initially, because of the historical value of Aleppo, all the maps were regenerated based on the war traces and the historical documents. The project used a complex adaptive system methodology with the integration of four critical indicators, including volume, void, function and transportation, to come up with performance-based urban planning.

This urban zoning required a center that offers an opportunity for the spirit of innovation and experimentation linked to the hopes of a new and better world. In response to this need, a district center was planned and designed. The design of the district center looked for public open spaces that connect people and made recreational activity more viable. Consequently, the importance of human comfort leads to positioning the open space by radiation optimization study. Furthermore, the post-crisis state of this project is adequately represented in the perforated second skin, which resembles the shooting in the Aleppo. On the other hand, the project perforated second skin with the inspiration from the "Sabat" archetype made transitional space that indicates the Syrian architectural heritage with a look into the new hopeful world.
